Non-negotiables in a relationship: how to decide yours
Last updated: September 2026
A non-negotiable is something you will end a relationship over. That is the whole test. If you would stay anyway, it is a preference, and calling it a non-negotiable only makes it harder to see the ones that are real. Most people have three to five. Anyone claiming twenty has a wish list, not a standard.
What an example actually looks like
A real non-negotiable is specific, observable and about behaviour rather than qualities.
- Weak: he must be responsible. Unmeasurable, and everyone thinks they are.
- Strong: he keeps the commitments he makes to me, including small ones, without being chased.
- Weak: he must respect me.
- Strong: he does not raise his voice at me or mock me in front of other people, ever.
- Weak: he should want a family.
- Strong: he wants children within the next three years and can say so plainly.
The strong versions have something in common: you can tell within a few months whether they are true, without asking him to self-assess.
What are three non-negotiables?
If you only get three, most women find they come out of these areas.
- Safety. No physical force, no threats, no controlling where you go or what you wear.
- Honesty. Not perfection, but no lying about things that affect your life: money, other women, where he was.
- Direction. He wants the same shape of life you do, and can say so without being cornered into it.
Faith, children and money come next for most people, and where they sit depends on you rather than on a list somebody else wrote.
I don’t care if it was a ‘mistake’. If I get even a hint of an untrustworthy partner, I’m leaving.
Non-negotiables versus dealbreakers versus preferences
A preference is something you would like. Tall, funny, the same tribe, a particular kind of job. Preferences are fine and you are allowed to have them. They are not standards.
A dealbreaker is a thing that ends it immediately, the first time. A non-negotiable is a standard you hold throughout, which a dealbreaker violates. In practice most people use the words interchangeably, and it does not matter, as long as you are honest about which things you would truly leave over.
Decide them before you are attached
This is the part that matters more than the list itself.
Standards set while you are single are clear. Standards set while you are three months in and in love are negotiable by definition, because you are now writing them about a specific person you do not want to lose. You will find yourself building a rule that he happens to pass.
Write them down during the talking stage at the latest, and write them somewhere you will actually reread. That is what our standards and non-negotiables worksheet is for.
The Nigerian version of this
Two things make holding a standard harder here than the advice usually admits.
The first is that your list is not only yours. Tribe, church, denomination and what your family will accept are all in the room, and some of those are genuinely your values while others are somebody else's preference you inherited. It is worth separating them honestly, because defending a standard you do not actually hold is exhausting and defending one you do is not.
The second is the age pressure. The older you get, the more people will tell you your standards are why you are single. Standards are not why anyone is single. Having no standards is how people end up married and miserable, which is a longer problem than being single at 33.
One local specific worth naming: how a man treats his mother is widely used here as a proxy for how he will treat you. It is a genuinely useful signal in both directions. A man who is contemptuous of his mother is showing you something. So is a man who cannot ever say no to her.
I know I would never sponsor a man or give up an opportunity I’ve worked hard for because I’m in love.
What to do when one is crossed
Say it once, plainly, with the consequence attached. Not a threat, a statement: this is something I will not continue with.
Then hold it. A non-negotiable you negotiate is not one, and he will have learned exactly what your standards cost to override. That is the real reason to write them down first: on the day, the list is arguing on your behalf when you do not feel like arguing.
